Abstract

This article investigates the interplay between attributional style and coping strategies as pivotal components of the resource potential of university students under chronic stress induced by military conflict in Ukraine. A review of the scientific literature highlights the significant impact of stress factors on mental health, underscoring the need to develop an adaptive attributional style and effective coping strategies to foster psychological resilience. Attributional style, defined as an individual’s framework for interpreting the causes of events, shapes the perception of life situations and influences the selection of coping strategies to manage stress. An empirical study conducted among students revealed a predominantly low level of adaptive capacities in their attributional style. Passive coping strategies, such as distraction and avoidance, were found to predominate, while problem-oriented strategies and seeking social support were less frequently employed. Correlation analyses indicate a significant association between adaptive capacities of attributional style and the construct of "Ego Strength" with emotion-oriented coping, as well as a tendency toward problem-oriented coping strategies. High levels of guilt were associated with increased use of emotion-oriented coping and reduced reliance on avoidance and social support-seeking strategies. The study proposes psychoprophylactic interventions, including emotional intelligence training and the development of mixed coping strategies, to enhance students’ resource potential. The findings emphasize the critical role of fostering adaptive attributional styles to effectively manage stress in crisis conditions.
