Abstract

One of the key challenges facing the domestic system of continuing postgraduate education is enhancing the professional competence of foreign language teachers and creating a supportive environment for their professional growth. This article addresses the development and improvement of English teachers’ receptive language skills (listening and professionally-oriented reading), highlighting them as practical tools for enhancing their foreign language communicative competence within the postgraduate education system. The article outlines teachers’ main receptive language skills–listening and professionally-oriented reading–specifying their purpose and providing teaching techniques suitable for adult education. It argues that in postgraduate training, improving educators’ foreign language communicative competence should begin with developing listening skills, thereby deepening the teacher’s understanding of this activity’s three main functions. The text also identifies the essential skills an English teacher should develop to enhance their methodological listening abilities. It also provides examples of exercises that can be effectively used in adult education. Furthermore, the article analyses the fundamental stages of developing an English teacher’s foreign language communicative competence during professional development courses, focusing on improving their professionally-oriented reading skills. It outlines effective strategies for developing a teacher’s professionally oriented foreign language reading. It includes a list of exercises for developing skills of reading for gist, for specific information and for detail, all of which contribute effectively to the development of the English teacher’s foreign language competence.
