Abstract

Although the Japanese language does not have gendered word endings that indicate grammatical gender, as, for example, Ukrainian, it still actively indicates the gender (or sex) of the speaker using a number of other methods. Among such methods are the following: dividing words into feminine (女性語 /joseigo/, 女言葉 /onnakotoba/) and masculine (男子語 /danseigo/), dividing pronouns according to the gender of the speaker (私 /watashi/ as gender-neutral; 僕 /boku/ as masculine; あたし /atashi/ as feminine — variations of the pronoun “I”), dividing particles at the end of a sentence according to the same principle (わ /wa/ - feminine particle, よ /yo/ - masculine particle), etc. Such active division can lead to the emergence and spread, as has been proven, of a false judgment about the naturalness of the appearance of differences in the speech of women and men.
