Abstract

The article addresses the issue of terminological inconsistency in the field of first aid within Ukrainian education and legal frameworks. The primary aim is to analyze how different terms describing assistance in emergency conditions—such as first aid, pre-medical aid, pre-physician aid, and urgent aid—are used in school curricula, textbooks, and regulatory documents, and to determine which terminology ensures both conceptual clarity and compliance with international standards. Methodology. The study applies content analysis, structural and relational analysis, as well as comparative review of legislative acts, model curricula, and textbooks for lower secondary education. This mixed approach enables the identification of overlaps, discrepancies, and semantic shifts across various contexts. Results. The findings reveal a significant variability in terminology. Authors of textbooks often employ different terms simultaneously, sometimes without alignment with official legal definitions. The term pre-medical aid is legislatively fixed, while pre-doctor aid and hybrid forms remain in use mostly in educational discourse, lacking formal recognition. Such inconsistency complicates the formation of a unified competence in students. Application. Establishing a uniform terminological framework is crucial for both educational and healthcare practices. Adoption of internationally recognized terminology would promote systemic teaching, improve student preparedness, and enhance the effectiveness of emergency assistance. Conclusions. The research demonstrates the need for a gradual transition toward the exclusive use of the term first aid in Ukrainian education and legislation. This approach would eliminate terminological redundancy, harmonize national practice with global standards, and support higher quality training for pupils in managing emergencies.
