Abstract
The article examines the problem of metaphorical actualization of the concept of movement in the modern Chinese language on the basis of novels by Chinese writers of the twenty-first century: Sanmao’s “Stories of the Sahara” (三毛 《撒哈拉的故事》, 1976), Mo Yan’s “Big Breasts, Wide Hips” (莫言 《丰乳肥臀》, 1996), Mo Yan’s “Satiety” (莫言 《生死疲劳》, 2008), Wei Hui’s “Girl from Shanghai” (卫慧 《上海宝贝》, 1999), Zeng Xiang’s Selected Works from Zhang Ailing’s Collected Works, Volume 1: Life in the City” (曾湘文选编《张爱玲文集卷–都市的人 生》, 1993) and Zhang Ailing’s “Collected Works of Zhang Ailing, Volume 5” (张爱玲 《张爱玲文集卷五》, 2018). We have studied, that the concept of non-physical movement in mental/psychological space is usually verbalized in Chinese by means of two-syllable directional complements (复合 趋向补语), which function not only to denote the literal movement of objects in space, but also to denote the figurative, metaphorical movement of abstract concepts. Among the types of sentences in Chinese, where directional complements are constantly used in their figurative meaning, there are two main types: affirmative and negative sentences, which can be both simple and complicated. The adjunct in sentences can be either brought forward to emphasize the interlocutor's attention, or break the very structure of "predicate + complement of direction", if the adjunct is quite cumbersome, or is a component of the so-called verb-object complex 离合词, etc. In particular, it was found that the most productive verb-complement combinations in the studied fiction texts are 看起来, 想起来, and 活下去, which reflects the emphasis on describing external characteristics, internal experiences, and life resilience. We concluded, that directional complements are actively used to convey abstract concepts through physical actions, which confirms the research hypothesis of the metaphorical actualization of movement
