Abstract
The project covers the translation of an excerpt from Elisabeth Carpenter’s novel The Vacancy for the purposes of a further investigation of the representation of realia and idiostylistic particularities by means of basic translation techniques. The focus of the paper is differentiated between the functions of realia in a literary work: creating authenticity, strengthening cultural and historical context, supporting character development, enhancing symbolism, and promoting reader engagement with emotional connectivity. The usage of author’s idiostyle to construct vibrant imagery that has a profound effect on the reader’s consciousness is also considered. According to our analysis, Carpenter’s idiostyle is expressed with lexemes and phrases related to interior and exterior, food and drinks, clothes, footwear and colours. Some instances of the author's idiostyle serve as examples of realia. Categories of realia in the text are identified: ergonyms, toponyms and sites; anthroponyms, social titles and positions; traditions and miscellaneous things, such as trademark, films, etc. It is pointed out that realia and idiostyle are intricately intertwined, providing credibility to the artistic dimension. The translation has been analysed due to the techniques, proposed by L. Molina and H. Albir. The following dominant techniques are outlined: adaptation, amplification, reduction, literal translation, particularization and transposition. The research underlines the significance of adaptations in translation for preserving the initial meaning and cultural nuances of the text, which helps to ensure efficient intercultural communication.
