Abstract
The translation project deals with the translation of the chosen fragments of the popular science book The Possibility of Life: Science, Imagination, and Our Quest for Kinship in the Cosmos by Jaime Green. The scientific terms representing various scientific areas such as evolutionary biology, astronomy, cosmology, environmental science, physics, chemistry, futurism, etc. were chosen as an object of translation analysis. The translation analysis revealed that effective translation of scientific terminology requires terminological accuracy, consistency, standardization, and preservation of the term’s conceptual meaning. Special attention was given to translating terminological onyms, in particular, names of planets, galaxies, and star systems which were rendered in the target language with the adherence to scientific accuracy and retention of standardized spellings as well as eponymous attributions unchanged.
