Abstract

The article examines the problem of the effective use of mobile technologies in the process of learning foreign languages in the context of the digitalization of modern education. The paper highlights the theoretical foundations of mobile learning as a component of linguodidactics and analyzes current scientific approaches to the integration of mobile applications into the educational process. The criteria for the effectiveness of mobile technologies are determined considering cognitive, motivational, and communicative aspects of foreign language competence formation. In the cognitive dimension, emphasis is placed on the development of cognitive activity, metacognitive strategies, and self-monitoring skills; in the motivational dimension – on the role of gamification, personalization, and immediate feedback; and in the communicative dimension – on the development of real speaking skills and intercultural competence. The most common mobile applications used in language education, namely Duolingo, Memrise, Quizlet, Babbel, and Busuu, are analyzed in terms of their didactic potential, advantages, and limitations. It is shown that these applications contribute to the development of lexical and grammatical skills, increase students’ motivation, and ensure the individualization of learning, though they do not always sufficiently foster productive types of speech activity. The pedagogical advantages of mobile learning, such as flexibility, autonomy, multimodality, and interactivity, are outlined, as well as its problematic aspects, including information overload, unequal access to resources, and the need for teachers’ digital competence. The paper provides practical recommendations for integrating mobile applications into blended learning models. It concludes that systematic and pedagogically grounded use of mobile technologies enhances the quality of language training and promotes the development of communicative competence among future professionals.
