Abstract

This translation project focuses on rendering fragments of Camilla Grudova’s horror novel Children of Paradise. The text is distinctive for its dense intertextuality, expressive imagery, and extensive cultural referencing. The work consists of two major parts. The first part presents the Ukrainian translation of selected sections of the novel, performed with careful attention to the author’s stylistic features, including grotesque elements, cinematic imagery, and multilayered allusions. The second part provides a linguistic analysis of intertextuality and expressive means in the source text, aiming to identify the most effective translation techniques for their accurate and stylistically appropriate rendering in Ukrainian. The study classifies various types of intertextual references (such as films, directors, characters, and cultural phenomena), analyzes their functions, and highlights the challenges they present in translation. Special attention is paid to expressive means that shape the atmosphere of the novel and the approaches used to reproduce them in translation.
