Abstract

The article presents a comparative pedagogical analysis of adult education centres in the system of non-formal education in the United Kingdom and the USA. The relevance of the study is determined by the growing role of adult education as a component of lifelong learning, the need to update adults’ competences, and the search for effective institutional models for organising this sphere in Ukraine. The purpose of the article is to identify the organisational characteristics, functions, and regulatory foundations of adult education centres in Great Britain and the USA, as well as to determine productive ideas of this experience for the development of adult education in Ukraine. The methodological basis of the study comprises the provisions of comparative pedagogy, lifelong learning theory, andragogical and institutional approaches. The research methods include analysis, synthesis, generalisation, systematisation, the comparative pedagogical method, structural-functional analysis, and the interpretive-analytical method. It is substantiated that adult education centres should be regarded not as a unified type of institution, but as an institutionally diverse yet functionally integral network of providers ensuring accessible, flexible, and practice-oriented learning for adults. It has been found that in the United Kingdom this network is characterised by greater coordination of funding, regulation, and inspection, alongside the combination of qualification-oriented training with socially inclusive practices. In the USA, the system is more decentralised and more closely integrated with employment policy, workforce development, and career support services. The study identifies productive ideas for Ukraine, including the development of a local network of diverse adult education providers, stronger intersectoral partnership, and the combination of educational, social, consultative, and career support for different groups of adult learners.
