Abstract

The article is devoted to an ancient type of technique for making woven jewelry from precious metals under the names Kazaziye, Kazaz, Kazazlyk, which was performed in the interfluve of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers back in the Assyrian period (2nd–1st millennium BC), and was later mastered by the symbiosis of Scythian-Hellenic masters (Greeks) and Lydians (3rd–2nd century BC – 7th century AD). From the listed peoples, the art of openwork knitting from metal bundles using silk thread was adopted by the peoples of the Caucasus (primarily Georgia, Dagestan), as well as Crimea, the lands of South-Eastern Turkey, where Assyrians and other early Christians have long lived, Byzantium, and the Ottoman Porte. In the latter, based on the developments of the Basilian court in Constantinople, the so-called nakkashanakh, imperial Ottoman workshops, were established. According to the archives, 30 jewelers worked in them at the beginning of the 16th century, some of whom mastered the highly artistic art of Kazaziye. In the middle of the 16th century, Suleiman the Magnificent became a fine master Kazazkor, who made royal-level gifts for his wife Roksolana. It is known that during this period, kutasiks made of woven silver, silver- plated or gold plaits of fine work entered the fashion of the male nobility, and they were also used to decorate the vestments of imams and women’s shawls. Also, during the specified period of time, Kazaz served as a precious decoration for Muslim rosaries-rosaries called tahrir (with the help of which individual verses-zikri, other prayer texts were read). Gradually, Kazaziye became part of the jewelry culture of the Georgian city of Trapezund (now Trabzon within Turkey), as well as the famous centers of Kurdistan, where Assyrians, Jews, Yazidis, Kurds, Arabs and Turks live, located in the South-East of Turkey – in the cities of Midyat and Mardin. Here and to this day, Kazaziye is made of white, oxidized silver, blackened silver, with gold plating, as well as gold products of this type. Today, in the mentioned cities, master jewelers continue to make pendants, earrings, pendants, necklaces, men’s and women’s bracelets with Kazaziye, brooches, and even jewelry for bags and shoes.
