Анотація

The goal of this research is to characterize a group of artworks depicting “The Last Supper” that incorporate solar symbols, examined through book miniatures, monumental painting and decorative and applied arts within the context of Byzantine heritage. The chronological framework of the study spans from the sixth to the mid-fifteenth centuries, a period marked by significant theological and artistic developments of Byzantium. Although the iconography of the “Last Supper” has been widely studied, the presence and function of solar symbols have received limited scholarly attention. Previous research has primarily focused on liturgical and Eucharistic interpretations, leaving cosmological and symbolic elements insufficiently explored. This study addresses this gap by analyzing solar motifs as meaningful components of the iconographic programme rather than purely decorative details. The research examines the typology of solar symbols, their symbolic and theological meanings, and the narrative contexts and artistic traditions in which they appear. Particular attention is given to the role of cosmological imagery in Byzantine visual thought and to the adaptation of these motifs across different media and regional artistic environments. The study includes Christian works from both Orthodox and Catholic traditions, as well as selected examples influenced by Jewish visual culture, enabling a comparative analysis of intercultural exchanges shaping the medieval period.
